AVID

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID began at Lehigh Senior High School Center for the Arts in 2008. AVID is a class in which students prepare for four year college eligibility. AVID students are enrolled in Advanced Placement courses and attend an academic elective class called AVID. Lehigh Senior High School Center for the Arts is the only high school in Lee County to be an AVID national demonstration school. AVID students may also participate in Cambridge as well as the Center for the Arts.

AVID serves over 250,000 students across the nation. Of the 10,938 2007 AVID graduates, 98% plan to attend a post secondary institution.

AVID is voluntary. Students interested in enrolling in AVID must:

  • Fill out the application
  • Return the completed application to the Lehigh Senior High School Guidance Department
  • Go through an interview
  • Bring a completed essay to the interview explaining "How can AVID help me reach my personal as well as academic goals?"

AVID's enrollment is limited to only 100 students per grade level. Historically, there is a waiting list for enrollment.

Tutorials

What is a tutorial?

Small group tutorial sessions are held twice a week, during the AVID elective class. During tutorials, the AVID elective class is pided into several tutorial groups. Under the direction and supervision of the AVID elective teacher, an AVID-trained college tutor facilitates the discussion and work at each group.

What is the purpose of tutorials?

* Create deeper understanding of concepts covered in core content class

* Develop skills necessary to become self-directed learners.

* It's not just homework help.

What are the goals of the tutorial process?

* To push each other's thinking. AVID tutorials use an inquiry process.

* Tutors do not give the answers. They facilitate the groups' learning process.

* Tutors don't teach the answers. They ask more questions. This is called the Socratic method

Students if you need a TRF for tutorials please print one from this page.
