MISSION: "Motivating young people to be better citizens."

GOAL: To motivate and develop young people is the goal of Army JROTC. The JROTC Program combines classroom instruction and extracurricular activities oriented on attaining an awareness of the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of citizenship; developing the cadet's sense of personal responsibility; promoting wellness and physical fitness; building life skills; and providing leadership opportunities.

CURRICULUM: Taught in accordance with the U.S. Army Program of Instruction (POI). Course content includes: Character and Leadership Development; Wellness, Fitness and First Aid; Drug Abuse Prevention; Geography and Earth Science; Citizenship and American History; Career Opportunities; Role of the Armed Forces; Technology Awareness; Command and Staff Procedures; Consumer Education and Budgeting; Unlocking Your Potential; and Senior Army Instructor Designated Optional Subjects, as coordinated with Lehigh Senior High School and Lee County Schools Administration and the U.S. Army Cadet Command.

REQUIRED STUDENT TEXT: Appropriate LET level texts and/or reference texts are issued to each cadet for the appropriate block of instruction. The JROTC texts are published by Pearson Custom Publishing, in coordination with the U.S. Army, at no cost to the cadet.

UNIFORMS: Cadets will be issued a prescribed JROTC uniform. The JROTC uniform will be worn one day each school week, normally Wednesday, and cadets are responsible for proper uniform wear and maintenance. Wear of the uniform is not optional and is part of the overall course grade. Uniforms are issued at government expense and will be turned in at the end of the course in the same condition as issued (less fair wear).

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: The JROTC Program affords cadets the opportunity to participate in numerous after school activities (Color Guard, Drill Team, Raider and Rifle Team). Cadets must maintain a "C" average in order to compete.

PARENT RELEASE: A Parent Release Form must be on file in the JROTC Office for each enrolled cadet. These are issued the first week of enrollment and must be returned prior to participation in any JROTC activities or equipment issue.

  • No eating, drinking or chewing gum.
  • Be respectful to each other at all times.
  • No Sleeping or sitting improperly in seats.
  • Be prepared for the start of class.
  • Observe all school rules and Army customs and courtesy.

GRADING: The level of student achievement will be determined by practical performance, participation, and written examinations. Grades will be determined based on performance in the following areas:

  • Leadership Lab and Uniform Inspections (25%).
  • Exams, quizzes, tests (25%).
  • Overall class participation (25%).
  • Completion of appropriate LET level workbook assignments (25%).
  • Merits will be given to cadets who participate in school and community support activities and extra curricular activities. Demerits are given to cadets who are insubordinate to leadership, show willful disobedience to rules or direction, fail to wear prescribed uniform, display improper conduct, demonstrate a lack of motivation/attitude, and abuse government or school equipment. Opportunities will be provided to "work off demerits." Merits and Demerits directly affect the overall class participation grade.
  • Cadets must maintain an overall 2.0 GPA to hold leadership positions (and associated rank) above Platoon Sergeant.

STANDARD OPERATION PROCEDURES (SOP): The Lee County Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps SOP will be reviewed in detail with each cadet during the first week of enrollment in the program. Promotions and demotions, as well as leadership position selection, within the Lightning Battalion are determined based on individual cadet merit. Out of school suspensions, for any reason, will result in rank reduction or non-consideration for promotion in the Lightning Battalion.

LESSON PLANS: A Master Training Schedule and a Weekly Training Schedule will be posted in each JROTC Classroom for cadet information and use. Cadets are responsible for making-up any work missed due to absence from a scheduled class. JROTC Instructors will utilize published U.S. Army Cadet Command Lesson Plans from the appropriate LET level Instructors Manuals.

NOTE: This Syllabus will be posted in each JROTC Classroom and will be provided to individual parents and cadets upon their request.
